Are you throwing a party and you have a few or maybe all attendants are expectant mums, and you don’t know what to serve them, here are some food suggestions to help you with that:
Fruit and Vegetable Salads
A mixture of fruits and slices of vegetables would be a great addition to your party meal menu. Pregnant women are likely to reject any food but not a colorful array of fruits and leafy greens. You can serve fruits such as green apple, strawberries, blueberries, grapes, raspberries, cranberries, dates, mango, etc.
You can add a little celery stalk, kale, spinach or collard green to reduce the sweetness and prevent blood sugar spike. Pregnant guests will surely appreciate the availability of this food and would not feel left out of the celebration.
Roasted Chicken with Vegetables
Serving a pregnant woman roasted chicken with vegetables in a party is the best way to let her know you care. Roasted chicken has less oil and would not end up leaving her nauseated. It is very tolerable.
The addition of vegetables such as Brussels sprouts, haricots verts and anything type of pure green that does not have a strong smell will do. You could sprinkle herbs such as ground pepper, powdered ginger or garlic on the roasted chicken for that extra-spicy taste. You could also have some roasted butternut squash on the side in case she wants some too.
You could make a lemon marinated roasted chicken and spinach mixed with raspberry salad. You could either dice up the chicken before serving it or serve it whole (not a full chicken, probably the laps, wings or breast). You can also make a lemon sauce to be served along with the chicken. It will certainly make her day and she will momentarily forget the stress of carrying a baby bump.
You could also make barbequed chicken and serve with fried pickles, cornbread muffins or buns. A chicken salad is also an excellent option. It can be served as a sandwich or just plain.
To keep things simple, you could include cookies as part of the menu. Most pregnant women can react to foods differently. So, maybe they might not be in the mood for some heavy meal. Cookies are sort of safe to give a pregnant woman to satisfy her sugar craving.
Some of the best cookies are chocolate cookies which will release some dopamine hormones into her body and make her feel good for the rest of the afternoon or evening- depending on the time of the party. Cookies could also be used as a dessert at the party. Serving it with sorbet will make it an elegant mixture.
This is an excellent addition that most pregnant women would love to have a taste. You can add it to the chicken or mash it and mix it with vegetables. Serve it with sour cream, shredded cheese, salsa or butter.
Steak and Salad
Small pieces of meat and vegetables stir-fried in a saucepan are another delicious choice of food that can be served at the party.
You can add mushrooms, sirloin, and zucchini on a skewer and barbeque it. You can then pull them off and serve them at the party or you can leave it on the skewer for those who would prefer to eat it like that. You can serve bread or buns on the side to eat with the skewered meat.
Most pregnant women use ice cream as a cure for heartburn. It can be added as one of the menus and the fact that it would safely be kept in the refrigerator will make it look safe to lick for pregnant women who are extra-sensitive about eating out during pregnancy.
Lime and chili Grilled Corn
This is a sweet and sour addition that could be added to a party menu. It would make a pregnant woman crunch all night and probably keep her mentally alert.
King Prawn and Dipping Sauce
This is one yummy food every pregnant woman would love to have a taste.
It could also help them reach their recommended daily allowance of nutrients such as omega-3 and protein.
Pita Chips with hummus
You can also serve this to pregnant women in your party. The salt content of the chips helps not to make them feel nauseous when eating and it could also prevent bloating. The hummus addition makes it more delicious and satisfying.
Sandwiches with various filing such as harm, turkey, pimento, chicken, Benedictine, or omelet can be served at parties with pregnant women in attendance.
This could be cranberry juice, blueberry, orange juice, apple juice, etc.
Depending on how big the party is, you can have smoothie stands where pregnant women can choose the type of smoothie they want and the ingredients they wish to add to it.
You could make strong-smelling foods and herbs such as cabbage, onions, tomatoes, garlic, and others optional. If pregnant women want them, they can ask for them. You can also serve apple with caramel sauce, cupcakes, fresh vegetables with dips, biscuits, bagel with cream cheese, etc.
To be on the safe side and avoid wasting money on foods that will not be eaten at the end of the day, you might want to ring the pregnant women you’ve invited and enquire about their food and drink preferences. They might be fine with a sandwich!
Ensure that everything is cooked properly and in a hygienic environment. Foods such as king mackerel, sushi, unpasteurized milk, bigeye tuna, tilefish, swordfish, shark, soft cheese or anything made from unpasteurized milk should be avoided. Check out the list of food to be avoided by pregnant women and exclude them from your least.
Also, if you are going to have other guests aside from pregnant women, then you could probably make a separate menu for both groups so that the pregnant woman won’t be tempted to eat something she is not supposed to.
